Legendary Mexican former world champion and International Boxing Hall of Famer Carlos Zárate underwent surgery at the Ignacio Chavez Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City, according to information shared by his family on Wednesday, June 23.
It was learned later that afternoon that he experienced no complications during the procedure and is expected to make a full recovery.
Jesús Carlos Zárate Serna, 76, had a professional career from 1970 to 1988 and was the WBC bantamweight world champion from 1976 to 1979. He faced opponents such as Alberto Davila, Nestor Jimenez, Orlando Amores, Rodolfo Martinez, Alfonso Zamora, Wilfredo Gomez, Lupe Pintor, Jeff Fenech, and Daniel Zaragoza, among others.
Zárate was named Boxer of the Year by The Ring magazine in 1977. He ranks 21st on The Ring's list of the 100 greatest punchers of all time and was chosen as the number one bantamweight of the 20th century, along with Rubén Olivares, by the Associated Press in 1999.
In 1994, Zárate was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
