Team Sugar Rush wins Sir Jessie Villasin Chess Team 2X2 Tournament

Team Sugar Rush, led by National Master Bob Jones Liwagon and Arena FIDE Master Zedric Silva, was named champion of the Sir Jessie Villasin Rapid Chess Team 2x2 Tournament (1950 and below average rating) dubbed as Tatang Bibo held at Robinsons Galleria corner Edsa, Quezon City on Sunday, May 17,2026.

Team Sugar Rush nabbed five wins and two draws to score 12 match points, the same output of Zigmak.

However, Team Sugar Rush had a better 11.5 game points against Zigmak's 11.0 game points to clinch the title.

Team Sugar Rush received the top prize of P16,000 plus trophy while runner-up place Zigmak got P8,000 plus trophy.

Liwagon, a major from the Office of the Judge Advocate, Philippine Army under the leadership of Col Allan Tiu JAGS, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support and inspiration of his wife, Dr. Zyra April Pluma-Liwagon, whose encouragement greatly contributed to his strong performance throughout the tournament, scored 5.5 points in 7 outings in Board 1.

Silva, on the other hand, notched 6.0 points in 7 games in Board 2.

"I am happy with my performance tonight," said NM Liwagon, a former top player of the multi-titled University of Santo Tomas chess team during his college days.

Team Sugar Rush defeated OCM (2-0) in the second round, Team Wild Bounty (1.5-0.5) in the third round, Hunterx Hunter (2-0) in the fifth round, Tira Tira Sampaloc Uno (2-0) in the sixth round and Team Super Ace (2-0) in the seventh round.

They split the points with Just For Fun (1-1) in the first round and G.V. Team (1-1) in the fourth round.-Marlon Bernardino-
