Guatemalan Lester Martinez, the 30-year-old current interim super middleweight world champion of the World Boxing Council, will be honored by the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, which has decided to award him the National Order of the "Sovereign National Congress" in the rank of Knight, approved on Tuesday, April 7.
Following his extraordinary unanimous decision victory on March 21, 2016, which made him the first Guatemalan boxer in history to win a world championship in professional boxing, Martinez has become a sporting and social hero for Guatemala.
Martinez's name is immortalized alongside Olympic medalists Adriana Ruano, Erick Barrondo, and Jean Pierre Brol for their triumphs at the London 2012 and Paris 2014 Olympic Games, as well as others such as marathon runner Mateo Flores and soccer player Carlos Ruiz, among others.
