JERWIN ANCAJAS DEFEATS RUBEN CASERO IN CALIFORNIA

Former Filipino world champion Jerwin Ancajas returned to action Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California against Ruben Dario Casero of Uruguay in an 8-round super bantamweight clash which Ancajas won by majority decision, 80-72, 80-72 and 76-76.

The lefty Ancajas, in his methodical style, controlled the action the whole night throwing effective punches to the body and head of the overmatched foe but failed to put away the sturdy Casero (13-5-0, 5KOs) who tried to time Ancajas with haymakers.

A head clash in the 4th round sustained a cut above the right eye of Casero's which Ancajas failed to capitalize.

Two judges correctly scored the fight as a wide points victory for the Filipino, 80-72, while the third judge was probably watching an imaginary fight when he scored the fight a draw.

Ancajas who reigned as IBF superfly champion from 2016 to 2021, and currently rated No. 5 by the WBO and No. 6 by the WBC in the super bantamweight division, hopes to position himself for a title shot against undisputed champion Naoya Inoue of Japan.

Ancajas's current record stands at 37 wins, four loses and two draws.
